Online Cellar

What is this thing?

The Online Pipe Tobacco Cellar is a program created by Jason Newquist, and expanded by Ryan VanderBijl. We are both currently maintaining the software. You can send us feedback, if you want.

What does this site do? Like wine, cheese and people, pipe tobacco changes with age. Generally speaking, people find this change an improvement (referring to pipe tobacco, not necessarily in people ;-). Therefore, many people will keep lots pipe tobacco in a cellar. The Online Pipe Tobacco Cellar helps people track the contents (and age) of their tobacco cellar. If you'd like to read more about the aging of pipe tobacco, please go to The Pipe Tobacco Aging FAQ.

Why should I create an account?

First of all, let's be clear that we aren't trying to gain marketshare or convince of anything. We simply believe that having an easy way to track your tobacco cellar is cool. It's quite possible to do this yourself using paper and pencil (and a calculator), or a spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel (which runs on your home computer) or Google Spreadsheets, which runs in your web browser. Both of those things are fine choices!

The reason why you'd want to use this is that all the customization and most of the data-entry has been done for you. So you don't have do type in all those pensky tin descriptions, or figure out how to calculate a tin's age and display it in years and months, and all that stuff. Furthermore, storing your cellar here is a really good idea if you'd like to effortlessly share your collection with the community of pipe-smokers. Building on this, we even have a "for sale" option where you can list those tins you're willing to part with, which the people around the 'net will be able to view.
